Jessica Paulsen

The first year of Henry’s life he made leaps and bounds. Every week he learned something new. His second year was slower, learning new commands involved stacking multiple more complex commands on top of each other. It was harder to track his progress and at times it felt like we were in the same place and no longer moving forward as we once had. Being back here in Disney exactly one year later from our first trip has made me realize so much. A year ago Henry wouldn’t sleep, let alone sit still during fireworks. Not even the highest value treats kept his four paws from jumping up on characters. He had to be led quite forcefully to get on rides. He would inevitably bark while waiting in the kennel. Most frustratingly he would not complete a single task, no matter how hard I tried to entice him. Fast forward. Henry sleeps through fireworks. He can successfully meet characters without knocking them over (although this is still not perfect). He’ll board rides quickly and less clumsily. He remains quiet in the kennel (99% of the time) and doesn’t have to be forced in. And there isn’t a single task that he hesitates on. It all happened before my eyes and yet took me so long to appreciate how far we have come. I’m so proud of what Henry has become and incredibly grateful to share my life with him. I don’t know what we would do without each other.
